![]() Summer is just around the cornerI am writing this as I open the cottage and look forward to another wonderful summer in Muskoka. The weather is spectacular, so raking and cleaning up the garden aren't really chores. Although those pesky black flies are here again! I hope you enjoy our distinctive new look with the loon logo — thanks to one of our hardworking directors, Michel Fortin, for his time and vision on this. Our township has been having well-attended Open Houses where ratepayers can meet and ask questions of Mayor Susan Pryke, Council and key township staff. There is still one remaining at Foots Bay Community Centre on Wednesday, June 13 at 7:00 pm. Budgets and taxesThe last month was a busy one up here with both Township and District budgets being passed. Unfortunately, we can expect an increase of over 6%. Our municipal taxes break down this way:
The township continues to have very aggressive capital plans that have an impact on our taxes. Our once high reserves have been greatly reduced and we will now be borrowing. These capital costs in the budget include the new fire trucks and new/upgraded fire stations. The good news is that these much-needed township enhancements will reduce some of our home insurance rates over time, so keep tuned. Most of the district increase will go into roads. Since assessments are frozen, no other changes should occur. Please consider getting more involved in Muskoka as we have openings on our volunteer board. Out board is composed of a good mix of permanent (30%) and seasonal (70%) residents. We also strive to have a mix of members on the big lakes (60%), small lakes (24%), and town/rural (16%) members. Annual General MeetingPlease set aside Saturday morning July 14 to attend our Annual General Meeting and Environmental fair in Port Carling.
